Move Over, “Double Down”

Just as the initial shock of KFC’s “Double Down” has worn off, the bar has seemingly been raised once again for total sandwich overkill.  Although not technically fast food, restaurant chain Friendly’s has added the “Grilled Cheese Burger Melt” to their menu: a burger with lettuce, tomato and mayo, served between two buttery grilled cheese sandwiches.

Nutritionally speaking, this monstrosity clocks in at 1,500 calories, 79 grams of fat and 38 grams of saturated fat.  Before you recoil in horror, this isn’t really even in the same ballpark as many of the most unhealthy chain restaurant dishes in America.  However, it has the Double Down beat, hands down (a mere 540 calories and 32 grams of fat).

The report at Consumerist points out that this is really a version of a southern delicacy called the “Fatty Melt” or the “Chubby Melt.”  Being from the Northeast, I have no knowledge of such things, J. Burger will have to weigh in.

Also, I have to back up J. Burger on the “Fatty Melt” and “Chubby Melt” ignorance. I don’t think they exist.

I never had the pleasure of enjoying the so-called Southern delicacies otherwise known as the “Fatty Melt” and the “Chubby Melt.”
